CHORAL MUSIC AS A MEDIUM OF CULTURAL EXPRESSION AND ITS IMPORTANCE IN THE CONSTRUCTION OF SOCIAL IDENTITIES IN A MIGRATORY CONTEXT
Abstract
Choral music has become a meaningful cultural tool for identity expression and social cohesion in contexts of human mobility. This study aimed to analyze the impact of choral singing on the construction of social identities and the transmission of cultural traditions among migrants and locals in the group “Harmonia Fidei” in Quito, Ecuador. A qualitative-quantitative methodology was applied, with a non-experimental field design using participant observation and semi-structured interviews with eight active choir members. Results showed that choral singing strengthened cultural identity, fostered a deep sense of belonging, and served as a means of preserving and transmitting collective memory. Participants stated that singing in a group allowed them to reconnect with their roots, form emotional bonds, and share traditions with others. The choral practice became a symbolic space of inclusion, where cultural differences were seen as opportunities for mutual enrichment. It is concluded that choral singing is not only an artistic activity but also an effective means of social integration, identity reconstruction, and community building. Its implementation in educational and community programs can promote cultural inclusion in diverse societies.
